The synth-pop duo of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel, better known as Phantogram, just released their second new song in as many weeks. "Celebrate Nothing" dropped this morning, along with an announcement that a new EP is just 4 days away. The new EP as well as a much anticipated new full length album "Voices" are the first signs of new music from this energetic duo since their 2011 EP "Nightlife". No official news on the LP release just yet, but I wager to say it isn't all that far off. There have been teases on their Facebook page on a number of occasions.
Any Bob Dylan fans out there??? Yeah, me too. If your Dylan collection leaves a little something to be desired, then here is your chance to not only fill in the blanks, but to own the ultimate Bob Dylan archive. Dubbed the "Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection Vol. 1"
If you are "Old School" and want the CD's, for $255.50 you can have all 35 studio albums, 6 live albums and a double disc called side tracks containing miscellaneous tracks not found on any of the other 40 some odd CDs in the box set.
For me, the harmonica shaped USB drive is the ticket. I mean really, how freaking cool is this thing. Coming in at a measly $319.98, its a steal and will be available on November 15th.

19 Year old singer songwriter Holly Henry had all 4 judges on NBC's The Voice fighting over her on last night's second episode of the season. Her rendition of Coldplay's "The Scientist" got Blake Shelton to turn his chair around within just seconds of hearing her angelic young voice. She repaid his enthusiasm by choosing him to be her coach for the season.
Graduating from Hopkins High School just last year, Holly Henry (Heinrich as the world knew her before) is a self proclaimed songwriter without much singing experience. We're looking forward to rooting for another Minnesota musician.... Good luck Holly!!!

Last night, Samuel Bean better know as Iron & Wine took the stage to a capacity crowd at First Avenue in Minneapolis. The show had been listed as "Sold Out" for weeks, but upon arrival at the doors tickets were still available, but obviously not very many. As a fan of Iron & Wine from a few years back, I had envisioned Bean on stage with his acoustic guitar and that was about it. Memories of "Such Great Heights" and its simplicity are what had me hooked on his brand of melodic sound. As Iron & Wine took the stage it was glaringly obvious that things had changed, as a dozen people and instruments found their spots and set up shop.
They made the switch from big band to Bean solo a few times, creating a rising and falling tempo to the show. While solo on stage, the room seemed to shrink. As fans shouted requests from the floor Bean would respond directly to them. When a robust "Boy with a Coin" came from the audience Bean's retort had the whole place laughing... He said "I have played this song for every show for the last fucking seven years. If you eat the same fucking meal for the same seven years, it's time to try something else."
To finish off the evening, Bean returned to the stage for a one song encore, the emotional and quintessential Iron & Wine track "Love Vigilantes". Bean stood in front of the microphone and said "I'm gonna do one more then send you on your way"...
While we enjoyed the musical stylings of Iron and Wine, just across First Avenue legions of 50-somethings sat inside Target Center suffering through The Eagles. One of the many requests shouted at the stage was "Hotel California", to which Bean replied, "Just lean your head out the window"... Thankfully, Iron & Wine ended about 20 minutes before The Eagles, allowing most of the crowd to avoid the walking sea of baby boomers.
In whole, it was a great show. If I had to come up with a complaint it was that when accompanied by the full band, Bean's vocals were at times drowned out. The big band sound was a welcomed surprise, but if the sacrifice was to override Bean's melodic voice, it wasn't worth it in my opinion.

The big band sound that emanated from the stage was altogether something else. Three guys on horns, three on strings, three female backup singers, a guy on drums and another on the keys... It all made for a rich - diverse musical experience. After a few songs, the lights dimmed and the rest of the band disappeared from the stage leaving Bean, his guitar and a microphone; exactly as I had pictured it. The (somewhat older) audience sang along to nearly every song, to the point that Bean commented from the stage how cool it sounded coming through his in-ear monitors.

Sorry for the bump in the middle of the video - security was hassling me.

Residing in Eau Claire, WI doesn't offer the large array of musical genres that the twin cities can, that doesn't mean we don't try. Keeping a close eye on who comes through town is fairly easy when the only venue I truly enjoy is the The House of Rock. When The 4onthefloor comes through it's a fairly large ordeal in my books and this time was no different.
What can be said about 4onthefloor that hasn't been said before. The Minneapolis based quartet have never failed to put on an amazing show. Standing front and center, receiving the sound they have directly off the stage this was the most memorable. Entering the stage they have a presence that demands attention. With four bass drums pounding to the beat, you can't help but feel it in your chest. Breaking a string on his guitar within five minutes Gabriel never missed a beat. Picking up the spare between songs they continued to play one song after the other. They played multiple songs off their newest release, "The Spirit of Minneapolis" , my favorite being, "King of the Jungle". Songs ranging from their first EP to the latest CD you can't help but enjoy every minute of it. The energy the band gives is absorbed by the crowd and returned in a fashion that they refer to as "stomping", with the crowd pounding their feet along with the drums the entire venue erupted with cheers for more.
This being such a small venue the band members come talk to the crowd after the performance, I spoke with multiple members of General B and the Wiz and continued my earlier conversation with the drummer of 4otf about the Vikings inability to draft a proper quarterback. He remembered the encounter from last time they came through town. If anyone gets a chance to see either of these bands don't hesitate for a moment to go. If its a small venue, even better you always have the chance to interact with band member and might even get a few autographs.
News broke yesterday that the Furthur will be on hiatus for the bulk of 2014. After their 4-day Paradise Waits event in Mexico this coming January, that's it for 2014... To calm the nerves of their devoted fans, the former members of The Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, reiterate that this is not the band "breaking up".
Furthur's official announcement...
After more than four years of heavy, year-round touring, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir have decided to put their band Furthur on hiatus in 2014. After the four night Furthur run in Mexico in January, the band will take the rest of 2014 off so that Phil and Bob can focus on their countless solo projects.
Furthur came together in September, 2009, and from its inception was a band Phil and Bob were completely committed to, and still are. In the 18 years since the Grateful Dead stopped being a touring entity, Furthur has proven to be the longest-tenured, and most active band featuring two or more former members of the Grateful Dead. With shows that keep the Dead vibe alive while pushing the musical envelope, well, furthur, this band has brought smiles to hundreds of thousands of fans in the past four years. Most impressive is that this has become a true band, and not just Phil and Bob plus some side players. John Kadlecik (guitar), Jeff Chimenti (keyboards), Joe Russo (drums), and Sunshine Becker and Jeff Pehrson (vocals) have joined the trip to create a band that has become one of the most exciting, honest and inspired touring acts in music today.
What does 2014 hold for Phil and Bob? If their activities outside of Furthur in the past four years are any indication, plenty. Phil’s been playing virtually every night when not on tour with Furthur, whether at his Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA, or on the road with Phil Lesh & Friends. Bob’s been hosting one of the most unique web-based variety shows in history, Weir Here, every Wednesday night when he’s not touring, presented live from his TRI Studios in San Rafael. Additionally, Bob’s been having a blast playing his solo acoustic shows, as well as other gigs and tours with newer arrivals to the party. He plans to keep doing what he’s doing, and more of it.
The last time the word “hiatus” was used in regards to the Grateful Dead world was in 1974, and we all know how much good that break inspired. They returned a year and a half later, stronger than ever, and for another 20 years. Furthur’s not breaking up; they’re simply taking a much-needed break. One way or another, we’ll see you around.

Being away from the stage while recovering from an ankle injury sure hasn't slowed down Prof. Waiting for this show, since the announcement months ago, has been hard but was definitely worth the wait. Set outdoors between two of Minneapolis' great establishments, The Cabooze and Whiskey Junction, it supplied the perfect venue for his return. With a bill to satisfy, including up and comer Mally, well established acts like Evidence and the two brother tandem of SoulCrate Music. Prof had the crowd of 4,000 ready for him to come to the stage.
SoulCrate, one of the best underground acts in hip-hop, quickly impressed playing songs off their recently released album "Welcome Back From Wherever You've Been" - which was ranked #36 on iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap top albums charts within a week after release. One of the last songs' in the set was the best one they performed, "All Day", they use the chorus of the song to get the crowd into chanting along with them. The set being backed by Later Babes DJ trio, how can you go wrong?
The heat continued to rise on and off the stage through out the day; with the acts coming on one after another ,before you knew it, the time for Prof to take the stage had come. The "Get Cryphy" DJ group had the stage before Prof went on and they didn't disappoint. Mixing between beats from the early days of rap to the most recent releases they had the whole crowd jumping and ready for Prof to grace the stage.
Prof's return to the stage was nothing but exceptional, the noise was deafening and the wait was finally over. His set ranged from his brand new track "Zoo" to his most popular track "Animal". He brought several special guests to the stage with him, St. Paul Slim to do several tracks and Shambhala brought the heat as well. With "Animal" 20 people selected from the crowd were brought on stage to dance, shoot confetti and pump up the crowd. From there the set became much slower paced as his time on the stage began to dwindle. With a man in a giant balloon surfing the crowd at one point in the night this was surely not a show many attendees will forget anytime soon.
With the day finally over and a chance to reflect, I had an amazing time and even though I would have enjoyed some of Prof's older joints I can't say I would argue with his claim that "all my songs are fucking amazing".
Looking for another reason to love living in the Twin Cities? Well, add this one to the list. Minneapolis mayor R.T. Ryback declared this coming friday, September 20th, "Har Mar Superstar Day"...
In what has been called the song of the Summer, Daft Punk's "Lose Yourself to Dance" has seen an amazing amount of radio airtime. Well, today we get to see their video interpretation of this hit song... Let us know what you think.

One "wall" of the Natural Amphitheater - (Photo Courtesy of Ikonic Sound)
Two friends and myself drove 10.5 hours overnight and made it to our friend’s town-home in the early hours of Saturday morning. Only catching a couple hours of sleep as to not miss out on all that Colorado has to offer, we scooted on out of the house and made our way up to Rocky Mountain National Park. It was my first time there and boy was it worth it – I highly suggest you visit if possible. After a long day of adventures we decided it was time to make our way to Red Rocks.
As we were rolling into Red Rock Amphitheater later on that afternoon I couldn’t help but be in awe of the beauty. Giant red rocks erecting out of the ground creating a natural amphitheater for our musical enjoyment - a gift from the gods. The parking situation isn’t all too bad. We parked along the side of the road leading up to the South Lots which made for an easy escape. Once we arrived, we cracked open some beers and began to wander the lot in search of other friends. After hanging out in the parking lots for about an hour mingling with other concert goers, we made our way up to the entrance. Despite what I had heard previously, the walk up the ramp to the gates is not too arduous. From the folklore I had been exposed to, I was prepared to walk 10 miles with a 50 lbs. backpack. However, after only about 5 minutes of walking up the ramp built into the side of the cliffs, we made it to security and were into the venue itself in no time.
I unfortunately missed the first act, XXYYXX, but was there well before Tycho took the stage. Hailing from San Francisco, Scott Hansen (Tycho) took the stage armed with a live band behind him. The ambient music took over the crowd and had everyone grooving along. This was one of the best opening acts I had seen in a long time, had it not been for STS9 being the headliner, they may have stolen the show!

Once they ended, stage hands went to work and got the equipment ready for Sound Tribe. This was one of the best Tribe shows I had ever seen; the lighting, the sound, the jamming, the atmosphere, the venue, everything, it all came together and made that night one of the most memorable nights in my life. Coming out of the gates with fan favorite, “MOD”, and quickly going into one of their classics, Arigato, this 21 song deep, 2 part set was an absolute party all night long. They played some music between sets by Gold Panda. I think they picked this experimental, glitch, deep house music to make you appreciate them that much more once they got back for their second set! Although at times Gold Panda’s music was outright bad-ass, other times I felt my ears crying and myself wanting to scream – an interesting experience to say the least. At last, Sound Tribe came on stage and continued what they had left off and jammed for a solid 2 more hours. They played some incredible tunes and came back on for a double encore ending with "Music, Us". The entire set is available through 1320 Records’ website: HERE.

Dropping their first new track since 2011, synth-pop duo Phantogram reminds us why we loved them in the first place... If this is any indicator of what's in store, I can hardly wait.
Prof promised a new track on his Facebook page and here it is. To hold us over for the next three days, Prof drops his new Willie Wonka produced track "Zoo". Check the new track below.
